Woody Paul Chrisman – Showdown at the Hoedown

An excerpt featuring “Woody” Paul Chrisman of Riders In The Sky performing “Arkansas Traveler” from the documentary Showdown at the Hoedown. The 1975 documentary from Sol Korine and Blaine Dunlap focuses on the “fiddle fest” fever that takes hold of the little town of Smithville, Tennessee each July. The “Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and Crafts Festival” started in 1972 as a way to pay homage to old time traditions. The popular festival attracts hundreds of musicians and thousands of spectators annually. They have a Junior Division and a Senior Division and each year they have a showdown between the Junior and Senior champions. In 1975, a young man from Triune, Tennessee by the name of Paul Chrisman won the Junior Division and went on to face the Senior Division winner and legendary fiddler Fraser Moss. The showdown between Chrisman and Moss was made famous by Showdown at The Hoedown and in 1977 the feature became the first folklore video documentary to be nationally broadcast on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
