Originally released on a Sparton 45, it was included on the Sparton LP “Maple Leaf Hoedown Vol. 3”, later reissued on the GRT label. The tune was published in the folio “Ward Allen’s Canadian Fiddle Tunes Vol. 2”. FRISCO WALTZ: This waltz in F has become standard Canadian fiddle repetoire. Composed by Allen and featuring a distinctive swelling accordion backup (probably played by Bill Mankiss) it was first a Sparton single and was then included on the Sparton LP “Maple Leaf Hoedown Vol. 2”, later reissued on the GRT label. It was published in the folio “Ward Allen’s Canadian Fiddle Tunes Vol. 1” GRIZZLY BEAR: Another gem culled from Ward’s singles for the second “Maple Leaf Hoedown” album. The boys seem uninhibited by the presence of a live bear in the studio! Key of C. THE OLD BOX STOVE: “The Old Box Stove” is a jig in the key of F composed by Ward. First issued as a single, it was included on the Sparton LP “Ward Allen Presents Maple Leaf Hoedown”, later reissued on the GRT label. The tune was published in the folio “Ward Allen’s Canadian Fiddle Tunes Vol. 1”. FIDDLER’S DREAM: From a 1955 78rpm Sparton single. Even though Ward is credited as composer on the label, this breakdown in G & D was actually a Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith tune. Smith recorded it in New Orleans in 1935. One of the few American tunes Ward recorded, it was never included on any of his LPs. MAPLE
